UBET STRADBROKE

HANDICAP (GROUP 1)

THE Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane completed a Group 1 double following Saturday’s success in the Stradbroke Handicap over Doomben’s 1,350m. A winner of the Goodwood three weeks earlier, the five-year-old Loup De Vega gelding has now won three Group 1 races this season with connections keen to tackle the $13 million The Everest in October.

“He may get a shot at The Everest,” said Freedman. “We’ve signalled our interest there, so we’ll see how that comes about.

“He’s a big gross horse who gets very fat very quickly, so he won’t have too long off.”

Winning by a length and three-quarters, the placings were filled by the Written Tycoon mare Super Cash with the Not A Single Doubt three-year-old filly Champagne Cuddles notching her fourth Group 1 placing in her past five starts.

“He’s always shown the sort of ability to be able to do that sort of thing and it’s nice to see it come to fruition,” said Anthony Freedman’s son Sam.

“He’s showing consistent form now, which he never really has in the past.”
