THE scratching of the red-hot favourite Omei Sword with a respiratory infection opened up the market for the Group 1 Flight Stakes for fillies over Randwick’s mile, which was then shrunk to six starters after the withdrawal of Quick Feet. Grasping the opportunity were the ‘new kids’ on the block, the training partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
Saddling up the A$65,000 Magic Millions yearling Global Glamour, the pair were rewarded with their first Group 1 as a partnership with the Star Witness filly able to control the race from the front, getting a break on the turn, and holding on for a half-length win. The All American filly Yankee Rose was second with the More Than Ready filly Sezanne third.
The win, Bott’s first at the highest level, was Waterhouse’s ninth in the race. “I don’t quite know the emotions that are going through me at the moment but it is an incredible feeling,” said Bott.
The Peter and Paul Snowden stable have maintained Russian Revoloution’s unbeaten start to his career, landing the Snitzel colt’s fourth win in the Group 2 Roman Consul over 1,200 metres at Randwick and taking down the Golden Rose winner Astern in the process. Third was the Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, also trained by the Snowdens. All three are set to clash again on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes where the locally trained Mick Price colt Extreme Choice will be waiting for them.
