IRISH 2000 Guineas runner-up Endless Drama profited from the absence of Winx, winner of the past two Apollo Stakes, to land a valuable Group 2 win for Qatar Bloodstock at Randwick.

Trained by Chris Waller the 1,400-metre weight-for-age contest was a maiden Australian win for the six-year-old (by Australian time) Lope De Vega entire who’d had four starts here before running last on a heavy track in the Doncaster Mile last April.

“Endless Drama sustained a hind leg injury after he ran in the Doncaster Mile last year and it has taken a long time to get it right,” said Waller. “He is a group performer in Ireland and he has been sent from the other side of the world to come here and take on Australian sprinters and it is great to win this race with him. He is starting to get towards (making) a commercial stallion.”

Ridden by Tye Angland, Endless Drama settled mid-field of the eight starters and needed all but the final stages to run down the dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour, a daughter of Star Witness, with the winner’s stablemate Comin’ Through, by Fastnet Rock, in third. “I was thinking the horses were going to come from behind but when I looked up Global Glamour had kicked well,” said Angland. “To his credit, he dug in well and I’m sure he’s going to improve a lot more with that run, he needed it.”

Chris Waller was delighted with his place-getters, indicating they would target April’s A$3 million Doncaster Mile.
