ENABLE’S great victory in the King George on Saturday was enjoyed by everyone in the racing world.

As her great career comes to its close, on breeding front though, the success highlights one of the conundrums of modern breeding.

Enable is of course bred 3 x 2 to Sadler’s Wells which rules out any Sadler’s Wells and Galileo line stallions and Sea The Stars as potential mates at stud. Juddmonte’s own Kingman may be a possibility as he is off to a tremendous start and with Coolmore now investing in his speedy son Calyx.

If Enable was brilliant on Saturday, the Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck was less so on Saturday - even if a certain ITV broadcaster’s immediate postrace assessment was unnecessary and out of order.

The fact remains that this year, Coolmore now have this season four Group 1-winning, three-year-old sons of Galileo requiring a place at stud. And a roster full of his sons already.

Galileo is so dominant, he or his sons sired eight of the nine runners in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood.

The female lines from the great sire have also to find partners and the death of Deep Impact rules out an option used in recent years. It leaves more and more responsibility on the US bloodlines and the two Triple Crown winners standing in Coolmore America.

“And American Pharoah is the one!” – was the commentator’s cry after he sealed the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. And a few years on, in the breeding stakes – he’s could still be very much the one!
