JUSTIFY arrived at Ashford Stud in Kentucky on Monday after it was revealed that the undefeated Triple Crown winner had been sold to Coolmore America last week.

The decision was announced by WinStar Farm’s CEO Elliot Walden yesterday week and it means Ashford - already the home of American Pharoah - will become only the fourth stud to stand two Triple Crown-winning sires at the same time.

Trained by Bob Baffert, the son of Scat Daddy was unraced as a two-year-old but went unbeaten in six runs at three, winning four Grade 1s in all. He was retired in July with an ankle injury.

A decision on selling Justify to Coolmore was rumoured to have taken place before the colt won the Preakness Stakes and the price is believed to be in the region of $60 million, with a bonus kicking in when the colt went on to win the Triple Crown.

His racing owners include WinStar Farm, China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, and Starlight Racing, all of which were consulted before a decision was made on the sale.

It is believed that a Japanese investment syndicate was involved in the bidding contest but key in the decision to sell to Coolmore was that all partners could retain breeding rights in the horse.

A decision about Justify’s covering fee will be made soon and he is set to cover his first mares next February, with Coolmore’s European mares set to be among the first to visit.
