RALPH Beckett built on his strong autumn form by landing a 3,839/1 four-timer at Newmarket, all ridden by Harry Bentley, with the feature win coming with Max Vega (7/1) in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes.

The son of Lope De Vega stayed on strongly in the soft ground to beat Miss Yoda (John Gosden/Frankie Dettori) and Berkshire Rocco (Andrew Balding/Oisin Murphy) by three lengths and three-quarters of a length.

Aidan O’Brien’s warm favourite Mythical was underwhelming in fourth, travelling well under Ryan Moore, but picking up only gradually. The soft ground could be a major factor in the result.

Like Pinatubo, Max Vega is by a winner of both the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club out of a Dalakhani mare, and he has certainly inherited plenty of stamina judged on the way he powered home.

The Group 3 Darley Stakes went the way of Feliciana De Vega, who relished conditions and posted a career-best performance to score at 4/1. The three-year-old filly had won both starts last year, but made a belated reappearance in August, and wasn’t seen to best effect on either start prior to this, so was entitled to show improved form, especially with her yard firing on all cylinders.

The winner is unexposed and deserving of full credit for this success.

Beckett also landed the Listed Boadicea Stakes with a back-to-form Richenza (11/1), who had been beaten four times at this level before, and arguably didn’t need to improve in a race where many were unsuited to either conditions or the way the race panned out.

Also successful for the Kimpton Down handler were Tomfre in the nursery and Lucander in a similar event at York, making a remarkable five wins from six runners on the day.
