ROSEHILL GUINEAS

(GROUP 1)

JUST 40 minutes after celebrating Winx’s 28th win, Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman combined to land a Group 1 double with the So You Think colt D’Argento in the Rosehill Guineas over 2,000 metres. Sent out favourite despite an unplaced effort in the Randwick Guineas, D’Argento landed the perfect trail on the Victoria Derby winner Ace High before settling mid-field on an easy rein.

Posted three-wide, the grey out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Fullazz kept improving on the turn to hit the lead with 100 metres left as the widest runner, winning by over a length from Vin De Dance who was later relegated to fourth on protest, followed by a wall of six horses.

“He really relaxed in the run and he was strong late. Whatever he does this time in he’ll be a better horse in the spring,” said Bowman. “He’s still immature.”

REASSESS

The official placings gave second to D’Argento’s stablemate Tangled, by Snitzel, with the Pierro gelding Furore in third.

“I’ve got to reassess my thoughts now about D’Argento,” said Waller. “Obviously he can stay and we’ll work out from a colt’s perspective where is his best value.”

Initial plans had D’Argento heading to the Doncaster Mile rather than the Derby. When informed on Bowman’s leaning for the Derby Waller quipped. “Is that because Hughie won’t be able to make the weight for the Doncaster? He is a pretty quick thinker, that Hugh Bowman.”

A $135,000 Magic Millions yearling, this was D’Argento’s fourth win from six starts and his first test at 2,000 metres.
