Death of former editor of The Irish Field

THE death has taken place, in Dublin, of Mr Thomas E. Healy, one of the best-known racing journalists in Ireland. With experience dating back half a century, he was a recognised authority on racing and breeding. He succeeded his father, Mr Edward Healy, as the Dublin correspondent of The Sporting Life and The Belfast Newsletter in 1910, and also in editorial positions in The Freeman’s Journal.

Subsequently he joined the staff of The Irish Field and, for a period of more than 20 years, contributed articles on racing and breeding. He was editor of the paper for a time. His services were keenly sought by editors of books and magazines devoted to racing. For many years he dealt with racing in Ireland for The Bloodstock Breeders’ Review, and his article on ‘Racing and Breeding in Eire’, which appeared in Flat Racing Since 1900, published a few years ago, was a tribute to his extensive knowledge of his subject.

Molony takes rider’s title

TIM Molony beat Fred Winter in a close finish for the National Hunt jockeys’ championship in the 1954-55 season which ended on Wednesday. Both started the day with 65 winners.

Winter went to Hurst Park to ride Halloween in the big race, the Queen Elizabeth Steeplechase. Halloween, although favourite, finished unplaced. Molony went to Towcester and he had two winners. This was Molony’s fifth championship.
