FOR one week only, two of Ireland’s best-known and loved artists are combining to exhibit their latest works, and most are expected to have ‘sold’ stickers placed on the paintings and sculptures as quickly as the animals they portray run.

In an unusual, and perhaps unique, twist, the two are husband and wife.

Peter Curling and Louise Wood bring something special to their work, both having a passion for all things equine, though both also deal in other themes, making their upcoming exhibition even more of a must-see.

In spite of the brilliance of both in their fields, and the demand for any new work, both are nervous as well as excited about the upcoming display.

“We believe that this will be the first time a husband-and-wife duo, whose principal specialty is horses, have shown together, and it has been a while since we have put our pictures and bronzes on public display. We have a special venue to do it in, and look forward to seeing as many friends, collectors and members of the public during our week-long exhibition,” Curling said.

“We are delighted that our good friend Willie Mullins has agreed to open it,” Wood added. “It is quite an honour to have him do so, and so close to his amazing achievement at Del Mar, winning at the Breeders’ Cup.”

Titled Curling & Wood, the exhibition runs from Friday, November 21st to 28th (closed on Sunday) at the Irish Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square in Dublin.

The six pieces by Wood comprise three horse bronzes, two with greyhounds and a standing lurcher. All are in a limited edition of nine. I thought that it might be easy to pick a favourite, but not so. That said, I was constantly drawn to both the ‘Three Hurdlers’ and ‘Standing Lurcher’.

The bigger part of the exhibition comprises paintings by Curling, numbering more than 50. They cover a range of subjects, displaying the artist’s great versatility. Racing, hunting, landscapes, cattle, sheep, flowers, people and more, this show has something for everyone, and is not simply for horse lovers. Prices range from as little as €700.

Curling has exhibited across the world, but is very happy to return to this venue for the second time, having shown there seven years ago. He and Wood have recently moved from Tipperary to West Wicklow, and in their new home he has found fresh inspiration for his landscapes.

Look out for his incredible triptych featuring the Wicklow mountains. It is simply stunning.

The multi-talented Wood forged a successful career as an artist, drawing and painting dogs and horses. She returned to sculpture in recent times, encouraged by the renowned Mark Coreth, and the quality of her new output only leaves one wishing she did so earlier. This is an exhibition to savour.
