BELLEWSTOWN has teamed up with Drogheda Arts Centre to stage Yellow Sam, a new theatrical production centred round one of the most famous betting coups in Ireland.
Based on events that took place at Bellewstown in 1975 when Barney Curley staged a betting coup which netted in the region of €300,000, the play stars Padraic McIntyre and Gerard Adlum.
The world premiere of the drama, which was written by Colm Maher and is directed by Paul Hayes will take place at the meeting on August 26th and 27th before racing at 3pm and again after racing at 7pm. The play celebrates the 40th anniversary of the events of that race meeting and Barney Curley is expected to attend along with Yellow Sam’s jockey on the day, Mick Furlong.
Nick Townsend, author of a book on the subject, The Sure Thing, will also be in attendance. The original telephone box and telephone used in the 1975 betting coup will be on display at the two-day meeting. While viewing is free with admission to the races, booking is strongly advised due to limited seating and can be made on www.droichead.com or by telephoning 041-9833946.
