THE premature death of Timeform 140-rated champion Dubai Millennium (by Seeking The Gold) was a shock and, although there were only five stakes winners in his sole crop, he left us a powerful legacy. His Group 1-winning miler Dubawi has become one of the world’s leading stallions. Now aged 16, the Dalham Hall Stud flag bearer has sired over 140 stakes winners, 33 of those successful at the highest level.
Dubawi’s sons and daughters have made a promising start at stud, a record that should strengthen over the coming years, cementing his legacy, and it is to be hoped that one or more of his sons will carry on the line. Those early sons include classic sire Makfi, multiple pattern sire Poet’s Voice, and also Al Kazeem and Monterosso, both of whom have their first blacktype earners on the board.
Those awaiting their first runners include Hunter’s Light, New Bay, Night Of Thunder, Postponed, Waldpark and Zarak – all Group 1 stars – plus the Group 2 scorers Dartmouth and Time Test. Two of Dubawi’s Group 2-winning sons had their first runners last year and both are off the mark with their initial winners, even though neither is a horse from whom you would expect to see many two-year-old types.
Universal is one and Worthadd is the other – both of them big-race winners over middle-distances, although the latter better known as being a miler.
Worthadd, who stands at the Irish National Stud, started his stallion career at a fee of €6,000, is available at €5,000 this year, his first crop includes a £130,000 breeze-up sale graduate, and five members of that initial group have been in the winner’s enclosure at least once. This is the year that we can expect to see the early Worthadds showing their talent.
His middle-distance score came in the Group 2 Derby Italiano, but his wins in the Group 2 Premio Ribot, Group 2 Premio Carlo Vittadini, Group 3 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) and Group 3 Badener Meile were all over a mile, as were his Group 1 placings in the Lockinge Stakes and Premio Vittorio di Capua.
He is out of Wigman (by Rahy), who is a multiple-winning half-sister to the dam of dual middle-distance Group 1 star Dai Jin (by Peintre Celebre), his third dam is triple US Grade 1 heroine White Star Line (by Northern Dancer), and the other top-level winners under the first three generations of his pedigree include Valley Of Gold (by Shirley Heights) and Preseli (by Caerleon).
