ONLY four first-crop sires were represented by two individual group winners in 2018 - No Nay Never, Kingman, Sea The Moon and Garswood, the latter whose fee of only £3,500 at Cheveley Park Stud is remarkable value.

Garswood ended his first season with seven winners of 10 races and earnings of well over £200,000, including Little Kim who scored in the Group 3 Prix du Bois at Deauville, and Cala Tarida another Deauville star in the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs. Yearlings from Garswood’s second crop fetched prices up to 55,000gns.

The handsome bay Garswood was an extremely consistent performer who finished in the money in almost all of his 15 starts spread over three seasons.

He defeated 18 individual group winners during his career and was the top-rated older sprinter to race in France in 2014, winning the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville,

Trained by Richard Fahey, Garswood won the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes at Ayr as a two-year-old, before a head defeat by Bungle Inthejungle in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot.

The following April he scored easily in the Listed European Free Handicap at Newmarket, then was seventh to Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas and fourth in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. At Goodwood Garswood beat Caspar Netscher in the seven-furlong Group 2 Lennox Stakes, before a third to Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp.

Garswood was never out of the first five as a four-year-old, including a close second to Gregorian in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and fourths in group races at Haydock and Goodwood. His final appearance was his best, as he went to Deauville in August and won the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over six and a half furlongs, beating 13 rivals,to be France’s sprint champion.

From the very speedy male line of Machiavellian, Garswood is one of the best sons of Dutch Art, winner of the Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and already sire of 32 individual stakes winners, including Slade Power (Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Group 1 Darley July Cup) and Mabs Cross (Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye).

Garswood, a half-brother to group-placed winner Zagitova, is the first foal of Kyllachy’s daughter Penchant, a half-sister to seven winners including Infallible, winner of the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and second in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes and Group 1 Falmouth Stakes. Penchant’s third dam Some Romance was the second best juvenile filly in USA in 1988, and she won the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and Grade 1 Matron Stakes.
