FAMOUS Name has made a very promising start to his stallion career, already with blacktype winners under both rules, Escobar in the Washington Singer Stakes at Newbury and Famous Milly by seven lengths in the Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree. He has 70% winners or placed horses from his first two crops and his foals made prices up to €35,000 in 2018. He certainly seems a bargain at his very low stud fee.

Very few horses have retired to stud with as many victories as Famous Name, who scored 21 wins in Ireland during a career spanning six seasons. These wins, mostly from a mile to 10 furlongs, included the Group 2 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh, no less than 12 Group 3 successes and seven listed races, for total earnings of around €1,500,000. Although Famous Name never won a Group 1 contest, he was five times second at that level and he was only four times out of the first three in 38 starts.

As a two-year-old Famous Name scored first time out by seven lengths over six furlongs at Naas, then in the next season he was rated on 121 in Racehorses of 2008, after winning the Group 3 Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial by four lengths and beaten just a head by Vision d’Etat in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly.

In the next three seasons, Tiemform assessed Famous Name on 122, 124 and 123, while in four of his six racing seasons he had earnings exceeding £200,000. He became virtually unbeatable in Ireland in Group 3 and listed races from a mile to 10 furlongs, with hat-tricks in the Group 3 Meld Stakes and Group 3 Amethyst Stakes, both at Leopardstown, and also winning the Group 3 International Stakes at the Curragh on three occasions.

He had several near misses in Group 1 events, notably second in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and twice second in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. He was also third to So You Think in the Irish Champion Stakes.

Dansili, the sire of Famous Name, was an outstanding miler and a European champion in 2000. He is already the sire of 133 blacktype winners, 21 of those at Group 1 level, including world champion Harbinger, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Rail Link, Grand Prix de Paris star Zambezi Sun and The Fugue.

Famous Name’s dam Fame At Last won at two years and has bred seven winners, including his full-sister Big Break who won the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown. The next dam Ranales, a winner in the USA, is half-sister to the grandam of Makybe Diva, who was three times successful in the Melbourne Cup.
