AN extremely consistent miler and sturdy enough to race for five seasons, the American-bred Red Jazz began his stallion career at Ballyhane Stud in 2014. He won five races, including the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket and two listed races, and was second or third in another 10 group races.

Red Jazz was one of the leading first-crop sires in 2017, with 21 individual winners of 34 races and over £400,000, including the unbeaten Snazzy Jazzy. His winning son Burgundy Boy, twice fourth in group company, sold for €260,000 at Goffs in 2017.

Johannesburg, the sire of Red Jazz, was the champion two-year-old in 2001 when he won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and three European Group 1 races. His son Scat Daddy scored in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and is sire of No Nay Never, Caravaggio and Lady Aurelia.

The pedigree of Red Jazz is also all-American on his dam’s side, as he is out of Now That’s Jazz, a winning daughter of Sword Dance. The next dam won five times in USA and produced nine winners, including blacktype scorers at Pimlico and Del Mar.

Quickly into his stride as a two-year-old, Red Jazz won his first two starts, first at Windsor by five lengths and then at Ascot, both over five furlongs. He ended that season with third to Group 1 hero Arcano in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket.

In his second season, Red Jazz was one of the top milers in England, rated on 125 by Timeform and on 120 in the World Rankings. He started by winning the Listed European Free Handicap at Newmarket and ended his year by adding the Group 2 Challenge Stakes by more than two lengths. In between he was beaten only a head in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and ran second in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket. Then in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, over a mile at Ascot, he was a very close third to Poet’s Voice and Rip Van Winkle, beaten only a nose and half a length, with Makfi behind him.

Red Jazz continued racing for another three seasons, scoring in the Listed Spring Trophy at Haydock and placed in six more group races in England, including seconds in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 2 Challenge Stakes. He twice made the journey to Dubai, where he was placed in consecutive years in the Group 3 Godolphin Mile at Meydan.
