THE breeding industry was dealt a blow when classic-placed dual Group 1 sprint star Mozart (by Danehill) died aged just four, but the nine stakes winners that his sole crop yielded include Dandy Man, a rising star among the sprint sires.

He was a listed scorer at two, took the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at three and was a Group 1-placed stakes winner at four, and from three crops of racing age he has already done something that many stallions never achieve – sire a son who is better than he was.

Peniaphobia, who represents his first crop, won the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury as a juvenile, joined the Tony Cruz stable, and rounded off 2015 with victory in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin, his third major win at the venue.

The gelding kicked off 2016 with a third place finish behind Aerovelocity in the Listed Centenary Sprint Cup (local Group 1 only) last month, also over six furlongs.

In September the Richard Hannon-trained juvenile Orvar took a valuable listed contest (local Group 3 only) over six furlongs at Veliefendi, and that was just days after the tragic death of the Olly Stevens-trained star Extortionist. Winner of the Group 3 Coral Charge and Listed Windsor Castle Stakes, the colt was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes, in the Group 2 King George Stakes and when third to Sole Power and Stepper Point in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

Dandy Man has also sired the stakes-placed Abbakova, Thatsallimsaying and Squats, last year’s Doncaster Spring Mile winner Chatez, and Parbold, a first-crop son who was placed in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes and Group 2 Vintage Stakes.

That he is a sprinter who gets mostly sprinters is no surprise as the grandson of Danehill (by Danzig) is out of Group 3 Anglesey Stakes and Group 3 Molecomb Stakes heroine Lady Alexander (by Night Shift).

That makes him a half-brother to the dam of Group 1-placed sprint pattern scorer Hamza (by Amadeus Wolf) and also to the flying filly Anthem Alexander (by Starspangledbanner), the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes winner and Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up who was third in the inaugural Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Ascot.

His grandam is the stakes-winning sprinter Sandhurst Goddess (by Sandhurst Prince), whose descendants include the Royal Ascot-placed juvenile stakes winner Patience Alexander (by Kodiac), and the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes scorer Sudirman (by Henrythenavigator) appears under a branch of the third generation of his family.
