NO Nay Never’s fee progression has been remarkable. Initially €20,000 and then trimmed to €17,500, the charge rose to €25,000 after an excellent round of yearling sales.

His freshman season unleashed a string of stakes winners that was headed by the undefeated Group 1 star Ten Sovereigns, and the son of the much-lamented Ashford Stud stallion Scat Daddy (by Johannesburg) covered 180 mares in 2019, at a fee of €100,000.

It is now €175,000 for the 2020 season, his 20 stakes winners include a classic star in Chile, and Ten Sovereigns has joined him at Coolmore. Last season’s book of mares included Group/Grade 1 winners such as Alexandrova, Bracelet, In The Fast Lane, Laganore, Sarah Lynx, Snow Fairy and Yesterday, plus the dams of top-level stars such as Bayrir, Hello Youmzain, Off Limits, Sovereign, Uni, and Zoustar.

Last year’s dual Guineas heroine Hermosa plus four-time Group 1 ace Magical – if she is being covered this year – are among what will no doubt be a similarly impressive line-up for 2020.

No Nay Never was a Group 2 Norfolk Stakes and Group 1 Prix Morny winner at two and runner-up to Bobby’s Kitten in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at three, but at stud he seems to be developing a similar type of profile to that of his own sire.

He, Lady Aurelia, Caravaggio (first crop are yearlings), Sioux Nation (foals on the ground now), and Acapulco have helped to create an impression in Ireland and Britain that Scat Daddy was all about speed, but in fact he was an eight-to-nine furlong horse whose best offspring in North and South America have typically been similar, some also effective at 10 and 12 furlongs.

Scat Daddy was a top classic sire in Chile, sealed his place in the history books by supplying the undefeated US Triple Crown hero Justify, has had 29 top-level winners among a total of 128 blacktype scorers, and yet he died at the age of 11. His stallion sons also include the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes and Group 2 UAE Derby winner Daddy Long Legs who, like No Nay Never, has a Grade 1 winner to his name. Most are awaiting their first runners.

No Nay Never is out of a half-sister to a couple of stakes winners, and his grandam’s half-brother Half A Year (by Riverman) won the then Group 2 St James’s Palace Stakes.

The Coolmore sire’s six Group 2 winners include the middle-distance horse Chestnut Honey, sprinter Land Force (new at stud for 2020) and notable juveniles Arizona, Mystery Power and Shadn, whereas Group 1-placed runaway Group 3 scorer Wichita could be a star in 2020. No wonder he had a long list of six-figure sales horses in 2019, including a 900,000gns Book 2 colt and a €360,000 Goffs foal.

NO NAY NEVER (USA), Bay or Brown 2011. Champion 2yr old colt in France in 2013. Won four races, £413,849, from 4½ furlongs to 6 furlongs, at 2 and 3 years including, Darley Prix Morny, Deauville, Gr.1, Norfolk Stakes, Ascot, Gr.2, Keeneland Woodford Stakes, Keeneland, Gr.3, also placed second in Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Santa Anita, Gr.1, Swale Stakes, Gulfstream Park, Gr.2.

Retired to Stud in 2015, and sire of the winners of over 197 races, and over £4,933,665, including BROOKE (CHI), TEN SOVEREIGNS (IRE), ARIZONA (IRE), CHESTNUT HONEY (IRE), MYSTERY POWER (IRE), NAY LADY NAY (IRE), SHADN (IRE), LAND FORCE (IRE), NIKISOPHIA (IRE), WICHITA (IRE), ART DU VAL (GB), LUCCINA (CHI), NEVER NO MORE (IRE), SERVALAN (IRE), TANGO (IRE), YESTERDAYONCEMORE (IRE), ALL THE KING’S MEN (IRE), NO NEEDS NEVER (IRE), ONTHEWAYTONEVRLAND (IRE), MAE NEVER NO (IRE)
