PROVEN classic sire Mastercraftsman added to his Group 1 tally in 2019, the victory of Technician in the Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp in October giving him a 14th winner at the highest level.

The son of Danehill Dancer (by Danehill) was a champion two-year-old who went on to take the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas and Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes before second- and third-place finishes to Sea The Stars in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York and Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. His racing and pedigree profile made him a likely sort to get his best winners in all age groups and mostly in the seven-to-14 furlong range.

The emergence of Kingston Hill, The Grey Gatsby and Amazing Maria from his first crop identified him as a sire with the potential to make an impact. Kingston Hill won the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at two, was runner-up in the Derby at Epsom and won the Group 1 St Leger at Doncaster. The young Castlehyde Stud resident had several first-crop juvenile winners in 2019.

The Grey Gatsby was pattern-placed at two and a champion at three, winning the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) and Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes and chasing home Australia in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes. He was also runner-up in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes, Group 1 Dubai Turf and Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes as a four-year-old, and the Haras du Petit Tellier stallion now has yearlings.

Amazing Maria, a pattern-winning juvenile, went on to take the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and Group 1 Prix Rothschild over a mile.

Since then, Mastercraftsman has had US Grade 1 stars A Raving Beauty and Off Limits, New Zealand Group 1 winners Danzdanzdanz, Saint Emilion, Thee Auld Floozie and Valley Girl, and a trio of Grade 1 scorers in Chile whose best wins include that country’s equivalents of the 1000 Guineas and Derby.

The aforementioned Technician promises to be a leading performer from 14 furlongs upwards, whereas the brilliant Alpha Centauri was a champion at a mile.

Mastercraftsman, who comes from the family of the Group 1 stars Pressing (by Soviet Star), Sakhee (by Bahri) and River Memories (by Riverman), has an overall total of 67 stakes winners that include others who have been classic- or Group 1-placed, and there is every reason to believe that he will continue to add to those tallies in the coming seasons.

His yearlings made up to €240,000 in 2019, paid for a full-sister to Technician, with three Orby Sale lots making six-figure sums and a further one each in Germany and Newmarket. His foals of last season made up to 80,000gns.
