SPEED and precocity are two of the traits immediately associated with the progeny of Danzig (by Northern Dancer) and these are also shared by many of his descendants.
In Europe two of his classic-placed Group 1-winning sprinters forged their own branches of his powerful line, and year after year the general sires list, the sires of two-year-olds list and the freshman sires list has many of their representatives among those most highly ranked.
The Green Desert branch features standout sires such as Invincible Spirit, Cape Cross and Oasis Dream, and each of that trio has shown potential as a source of top-class stallion sons.
The first named, for example, has the classic sire Lawman on his roll of honour, along with the Australian freshman champion I Am Invincible, blacktype sires Zebedee and Vale Of York, and a string of younger horses such as Charm Spirit, Mayson, Swiss Spirit and the mighty Kingman awaiting runners.
Zebedee’s oldest progeny have just turned four and although they include the Group 1-placed Magical Memory, the Stewards’ Cup hero who could be one of the star sprinters of 2016, so far it is another first-crop son who stands out as being his sire’s best performer on the track.
Ivawood was one of the best juveniles of 2014, a wide-margin winner of the Group 2 July Stakes and Group 2 Richmond Stakes and only beaten by a nostril when runner-up to Charming Thought in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes.
Last season he was third behind Gleneagles in both the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, and as he a grandson of both Invincible Spirit and Group 1 Prix de l’Opera heroine Kinnaird he looks certain to be very popular in his new role.
Ivawood it out of Keenes Royale, a triple winning half-sister to Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes scorer Berkshire (by Mount Nelson), and his star grandam, a half-sister to the Group 3 Chester Vase winner Mickdaam (by Dubawi), comes from a family whose blacktype winners feature the classic-placed dual stakes winner Shifting Power (by Compton Place) and Hong Kong Derby hero Salford Mill (by Peintre Celebre).
With his record and male line he will surely get plenty of fast two-year-olds and some high-class sprinters, but he also stayed a mile and, on the distaff side of his family, it is over that distance that he was bred to excel.
This gives Ivawood the potential to get sprinters and milers and, with the right mares, some who will also stay 10 furlongs, and that wider scope will improve his prospects of taking high rank beyond his freshman season.
