NOT many stallions have a better pedigree than Archipenko, who is by Kingmambo out of a stakes-winning half-sister to Nureyev and to the dam of Sadler’s Wells.

What is more, he was a winner in each of his four seasons in training, with a Group 1 victory and three Group 2 events to his credit.

He had his first runners in 2013 and has already sired over 50 individual winners, including seven blacktype winners.

Among those are Madame Chiang, who won the Group 1 British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot and the Group 3 Musidora Stakes at York, Kingston Mines, a double group winner in South Africa, and five listed scorers, including the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary third Lady Penko.

Then this month Archipenko’s son Lazzam was second in the Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas in Dubai.

strong demand

Archipenko’s yearlings were in strong demand in 2015, averaging over €40,000, and three of them sold for six-figure sums at Newmarket, with the BBA Ireland paying 115,000gns for the colt out of Almiranta.

Trained first by Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, Archipenko scored over seven furlongs at Leopardstown at two years old, then returned to that track the next year to defeat Yellowstone in the Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes.

Moving on to South African trainer Mike de Kock, Archipenko was sent to Dubai for the Carnival and won the Group 2 Al Fahidi Fort Stakes over a mile, before finishing a close third in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free. A month later he was in Hong Kong where he won the valuable Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup, then his next start was at Ascot in July for another victory in the Group 2 Summer Mile, beating Ramonti. He was a very unlucky second in the Grade 1 Arlington Million in Chicago.

Timeform’s Racehorses of 2008 assessed him on 127, while the World Rankings made him one of the top three older horses in Europe over 10 furlongs.

The following year in Dubai, Archipenko scored in the Group 3 Zabeel Mile first time out, carrying top weight and earning a Timeform rating of 126, but then an injury ended his racing career and he retired to Lanwades Stud.

Bound, his dam, was a listed winner at Churchill Downs and third in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes. She bred nine winners including the Aqueduct listed winner Limit, and she is grandam of 2010 US champion older horse Blame. Bound is also three-parts sister to champion Nureyev and half-sister to Fairy Bridge, the dam of Sadler’s Wells.
