Danzig (by Northern Dancer) was one of the truly great stallions of the modern era, recording a phenomenal portfolio with his Group 1 stars, sire sons and broodmares, and having a tremendous influence that has been felt around the world.

Two of his sons have forged their own dynasties in Europe, namely the classic placed, Group 1 sprint stars Danehill and Green Desert and the Ballylinch Stud stallion Lawman represents the latter.

He won over a mile as a juvenile and took each of the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby), Group 1 Prix Jean Prat, and Group 3 Prix de Guiche at three, making him the first classic star for his sire Invincible Spirit (by Green Desert).

He is now also the first of that stallion’s sons to have sired a classic winner of his own as, in 2013, his daughter Just The Judge (dam by Rainbow Quest) won the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh, shortly after losing out narrowly to Sky Lantern in the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The filly was also placed in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Ascot and, as a juvenile, she won the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes and the Listed Washington Singer Stakes.

Just The Judge is one of three Group 1 winners to have emerged, so far, from the first three crops of Lawman.

Law Enforcement (dam by Rainbow Quest) won the Group 1 Gran Criterium in Italy as a two-year-old and Most Improved (dam by Linamix), who is now starting his first season at stud, was a Group 1 placed juvenile before going on to take the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot.

Add to these nearly 20 other blacktype earners, including the pattern scorers Forces Of Darkness (dam by Dr Fong), Lady Wingshot (dam by Sadler’s Wells), Loi (dam by Inchinor), Nargys (dam by Indian Ridge), and Us Law (dam by Linamix), and it is clear that Lawman is a young stallion with considerable potential.

Lawman is out of Laramie (by Gulch) and that makes him a half-brother to the Group 1 Prix de Diane (French Oaks) heroine Latice (by Inchinor).

He is also a half-brother to the Group 1 placed pattern scorer Satri (by Mujadil), who has sired winners, and Latice is, in turn, the dam of the Group 1 placed dual listed scorer Fencing (by Street Cry).

His grandam Light The Lights (by Shirley Heights) won the Group 2 Prix Pomone and she was out of the Group 3 Prix de Flore winner and Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary runner-up Lighted Glory (by Nijinsky), which may be how he became one of his sire’s mile to 10- furlong horses rather than one of his sprint stars.

Lawman’s best progeny are, like him, effective mostly in the mile to 10-furlong range in which he excelled, although with the stakes-winning sprinter Lover Man (dam by Fairy King) and the seven-furlong Group 3 scorers Lady Wingshot and Nargys among them, he is clearly capable of getting horses who are suited to shorter distances.

The ability to get a mixture of sprinters, milers and middle-distance horses, juveniles, classic generation and older horses, boosts his prospects of taking high-rank in the overall European sires championship in the years to come.
