MONSUN was a top-class racehorse and one of the greatest German stallions of all time, and Gestut Schlenderhan’s late flag bearer left behind a powerful legacy.
His daughters are prized as broodmares and his stallion sons include German champion sire Samum and Group 1-getters Shirocco and Manduro, the latter among the winners at Meydan on Saturday thanks to the repeat Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup victory of his dual Group 1-winning son Vazirabad.
The Monsun stallions have also made a powerful impact on the National Hunt sector with many blacktype winners of whom recently retired superstar Sprinter Sacre stands out. He is a son of Network.
Shirocco has given us Grade 1 Champion Hurdle heroine Annie Power, Manduro’s flat Group 1 stars are joined by National Hunt graded scorers such as Baradari and Rashaan, while Arcadio, Axxos, September Storm are others who have been successful.
It is no surprise, therefore, that Grange Stud’s Monsun horse Getaway is a rising star of the stallion ranks, with a string of point-to-point, bumper and hurdle winners among his early runners, including Cheltenham Festival fourth Verdana Blue, Agamemmon, Getaway Whiskey, Seelateralligator, and the exciting Getabird.
The latter, a point-to-point winner who is unbeaten in two bumpers for the Willie Mullins stable, made €200,000 at last year’s Goffs Punchestown NH Sale, a price that has been beaten by Getaway’s once-raced point-to-point winners The Dellercheckout and Cool Getaway.
The former made £260,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Festival Sale last month, while the latter made £305,000 at the same company’s Cheltenham December Sale of 2016.
Champion and dual Group 1 star Getaway is a full-brother to the champion and classic heroine Guadalupe and his dam, the unraced Guernica is a half-sister to Royal Rebel (by Robellino), dual winner of the Group 1 Gold Cup at Ascot. Greenvera, the grandam of Getaway, is a half-sister to Gerbera (by Lyphard) whose stakes-winning daughter Renashaan (by Darshaan) produced Alexander Goldrun (by Gold Away) and Medecis (by Machiavellian).
The latter, a classic-placed pattern winner in France, sired the Australian Group 1 scorer December Draw, while Alexander Goldrun is champion racemare whose 10 wins featured the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, Prix de l’Opera, Hong Kong Cup and two editions of the Pretty Polly Stakes.
