AN extremely consistent performer who finished in the money in most of his 15 starts spread over three seasons, Garswood defeated 18 individual group winners and was the top-rated older sprinter to race in France in 2014.
Soon after winning the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville, he retired to Cheveley Park Stud and his first crop are yearlings in 2017. He was represented by 25 of those at last autumn’s foal sales, where they averaged over six times his stud fee, with two colts selling for around €100,000 each at Newmarket to Shadwell Estates and Yeomanstown Stud.
Trained by Richard Fahey, Garswood was placed at York and Goodwood in his first two starts as a two-year-old, then won the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes at Ayr, before being beaten only a head by Bungle Inthejungle in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot.
He was back to winning ways the next April, scoring by over two lengths in the Listed European Free Handicap at Newmarket, then was seventh to Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas and fourth in a huge field for the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. Garswood proved himself a star in Group 2 company at Goodwood, where he defeated Caspar Netscher in the seven-furlong Lennox Stakes, before ending the year with a third to Moonlight Cloud in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret.
Garswood was never out of the first five in five outings as a four-year-old, which included a close second to Gregorian in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket. His final appearance was his best, as he went to Deauville in August and won the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over six and a half furlong, beating 13 rivals including Thawaany, Fiesolana and Gregorian and becoming the top-rated older sprinter in France in 2014.
From the speedy male line of Machiavellian, Garswood is one of the best sons of Dutch Art, winner of the Group 1 Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes and already sire of 26 individual stakes winners, including also Slade Power (Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Darley July Cup).
Garswood is the first foal of the unraced Penchant, a half-sister to seven winners including Infallible who scored in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and was second in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes before producing blacktype winners Mutakayyef and Intimation. Penchant’s third dam Some Romance was a leading filly on the USA, winning the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and Matron Stakes.
