A DAY before Ireland staged the first juvenile race of the season on home soil, the Brocklesby Stakes was won in England by Izzer, and this was a success story for Rathasker Stud near Naas who bred him and stand his sire Clodovil (Danehill).

Gill Richardson gave 11,000gns for Izzer in Book 3 of the Tattersalls Yearling Sale last October, and his win has netted owners David Hudd and Chris Wright just over £7,350 in prizemoney. The colt is the first foal of his dam Broadway Musical (Exceed And Excel) and she was purchased through Emerald Bloodstock for 3,000gns out of James Tate’s yard and put in training with Willie McCreery. She was placed fourth a few times at three in the colours of Madeline Burns.

Following Izzer comes a yearling filly by Anjaal (Bahamian Bounty), Rathasker’s Group 2 July Stakes winner. Broadway Musical was covered early this year by Gregorian (Clodovil) and has been scanned in foal to that National Stud-based sire.

Broadway Musical is one of seven runners for her dam Broadway Hit, five of which are winners and the others were placed. Broadway Hit is a daughter of Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) who sold as a yearling for 240,000gns, never raced and was resold in November 2016 for just €4,000.

Broadway Hit is a half-sister to no less than three Group 1 winners. The most recent is Dank (Dansili) and her greatest triumph was at Santa Anita in 2013 when she won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Her first foal is a two-year-old daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) named Gloam who was bought last year for 4,000,000 guineas.

Dank is a daughter of Masskana (Darshaan) and the first of her trio of Group 1 winners was the champion French juvenile filly Sulk (Selkirk) who showed great versatility to be runner-up in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak and Nassau Stakes, over 15 and nine furlongs respectively.

The third Group 1 winner is New Zealand stallion Eagle Mountain (Rock Of Gibraltar). He won the Hong Kong Cup at four, was runner-up in the Epsom Derby at three and was a Group 2 Beresford Stakes winner at two. He also finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Group 1 Champion Stakes at Newmarket.

Masskana bred a fourth stakes winner in Wallace (Royal Academy) and she is the third dam of Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas winner Gold Town (Street Cry). He starts favourite for tonight’s UAE Derby. Izzer is from the 12th crop of Clodovil who stands alongside his son Es Que Love at Rathasker.
