THE Rainbow Quest mare Flawlessly was placed a number of times in France and while she failed to win, she has more than made up for it as a broodmare.

Her seven winners include the Group 3 Prix Penelope winner Ombre Leger and two stakes-placed winners, including Date With Destiny, a mare who occupies a unique place in history – but more of her in a moment.

Flawlessly is the grandam of seven stakes winners, including the French Derby runner-up Best Name, and they have achieved these victories in six different countries, namely Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, the USA and Qatar. One notable omission from the list is a British stakes win, but that could come sooner rather than later.

Last week Date With Destiny’s first foal, Beautiful Morning, started to pay back some of the 650,000gns she cost as a yearling when she won the Convivial Maiden Stakes at York on just her second start. She has a lot of juicy entries later in the year.

Date With Destiny was well named as she is the only produce ever sired by the ill-fated George Washington. Bred by the Luciani family and foaled and raised at the Irish National Stud, the filly was sold as a foal to Gerry Burke’s Glidawn Stud for €280,000, a fine return on the sire’s €60,000 fee. The filly had a rarity value and much attention was focused on her as a yearling. She was resold for 320,000gns and Peter Doyle Bloodstock purchased her for Julie Wood.

A winner and listed placed from seven starts, she was moved on at the end of her second season to John Warren for 185,000gns, joining the broodmare band at Newsells Park Stud.

The investment in a Galileo covering paid off and last year the now Luca Cumani-trained, Jon Kelly-owned Beautiful Morning was bought by Jamie McCalmont. Her sale price put her among the top 10 yearling fillies sold at auction in Ireland and England last year.

Date With Destiny’s second progeny is a filly foal by the Newsells Park sire Nathaniel and the stud will be watching the progress of Beautiful Morning with extra interest now that she is off the mark.

They will also surely be looking forward to selling a son of Dubawi out of the Grade 1 runner-up Flawly in Book 1 at the Tattersalls October Sale. That Old Vic mare is the dam of three stakes-winners to date, including the aforementioned Best Name.
