BELTOR put himself into the picture for the Grade 1 JCB Triumph Hurdle with a five-length success in the Grade 2 BetBright Cheltenham Festival Fund Adonis Juvenile Hurdle over two miles at Kempton on Saturday.

This was only a second outing over obstacles for the Robert Stephens-trained gelding, but he has also raced eight times on the flat, winning over 10 furlongs at Redcar in September, and so will not be too inexperienced when stepping up in grade.

He was bred by Stewart Aitken, and he is yet another talented representative of the Derby hero Authorized (by Montjeu), sire of three Group 1 stars, of the classic placed pattern winner Rehn’s Nest and 16 other flat blacktype scorers.

He is a Darley stallion, a member of the team at Haras du Logis, and like all good flat sires has also been getting talented jumpers. Those include this season’s dual Grade 1 winning novice hurdler Nichols Canyon, who was a pattern placed dual stakes winner on the flat.

Beltor is out of the Australian-bred mare Carahill (by Danehill), his siblings include the prolific winner Cara’s Request (by Urgent Request), and his dam is a half-sister to the southern hemisphere stakes winner Jamieson Valley (by Desert Prince).

His Group 1-placed grandam Balmacara is a daughter of the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner Bassenthwaite (by Habitat), she won a Group 2 contest in New Zealand, and her siblings include Vedodara (by Kreisler) who was a classic placed stakes winner before going on to considerable success at stud.

Vedodara is the dam of the 11-furlong Group 1 Avondale Gold Cup winner Sharvasti (by Montjeu), of the Group 1 placed pattern scorer Shastri (by Stravinsky), and of the pattern winning filly Bhandara (by Zabeel).

Balmacara and Vedodora also have a noteworthy sibling in Melrose (by Sun And Shine) who, although unraced, became the grandam of the Australian seven furlong Group 1 scorer Linton (by Galileo).

The third dam of Beltor is a triple winner called Vedo Bay (by Orange Bay), and that mare had a half-sister whom many here will recognise.

Canton Silk (by Runnymede) was a stakes winner in England and her progeny included the Group 1 Prix de la Foret heroine Brocade (by Habitat), the mare who gave us the classic stars Barathea (by Sadler’s Wells) and Gossamer (by Sadler’s Wells).

Barathea was a leading sire, Gossamer is the dam of the juvenile Group 1 winner Ibn Khaldun (by Dubai Destination), and their siblings include the dams of pattern scorers such as Armure (by Dalakhani) and Coretta (by Caerleon).
