A GENIE In Abottle provided breeder Loughlin Harte with a most timely update on Monday when the six-year-old won the Listed M W Hickey Memorial Chase at Wexford. The race is run in memory of Garryrichard Stud’s Michael Hickey, one of the greatest horsemen and stallion masters ever in this country.

The week after next Loughlin will be offering, from Abbeyleix Stud, a Yeats colt foal out of the bumper winner Erkindale Miss. That daughter of Supreme Leader (Bustino) was also bred and raced by Loughlin and she won her bumper at Fairyhouse on her second outing, ran second in another bumper at Limerick, and never appeared again. She is now dam of two winners and a placed horse from just three runners, the three-time winner Missyspet (Westerner) being her other successful offspring.

A Genie In Abottle was third to Disko in the Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown at the end of last season and the progressive sort has won both his chases this season. The first four dams of A Genie In Abottle have bred multiple winners, but he is the outstanding runner for many generations. His dam was obviously talented and is passing this ability on to her offspring. A €36,000 store purchase at the 2014 Goffs Land Rover Sale, A Genie In Abottle won a point-to-point to kick start his career, and has now added five victories in a bumper, over hurdles and fences.

Beneficial (Top Ville) is the sire of A Genie In Abottle and he won the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, and travelled to America to run third in the Grade 1 Washington D C International. He went to stud 20 years ago and was a mainstay at Knockhouse Stud until his death four years ago. His roll of honour of winners is impressive, while his daughters are also ensuring his legacy continues.
