I’LL Have Another won her second race in three starts at the weekend in the colours of Paul and Clare Rooney, trained by Mark Johnston. The two-year-old daughter of Dragon Pulse (Kyllachy) may not be a world beater, but she is a filly who could well earn blacktype, and she is from a very successful female line. In a weekend of top class racing, why would I pick her out for mention?

Well, I’ll Have Another was bred at Manister House Stud, home until recently of Frank, Liz and Luke Barry. Sadly, the first named died a few weeks ago and he left a legacy of good winners bred, bought and sold, and here is another example of the sound racehorses he was good at producing. She was sold as a yearling at Goffs UK last August to Kevin Ross Bloodstock for £32,000.

Now a two-time winner in 2018, I’ll Have Another also has a year older half-brother Bucky Larson (Footstepsinthesand) who can make the same claim. He was a 50,000gns yearling when sold to Ger Lyons and he followed up his two victories with a third-place finish at the Curragh on Irish Derby day. The pair of winners have one older sibling, a four-year-old filly Bitterweet (Power) and she is currently in training in Britain. The fourth produce of Jesse Jane is a yearling filly by Slade Power (Dutch Art).

What makes the victory of I’ll Have Another even more poignant is the fact that her winning dam Jessie Jane (Dylan Thomas) is a half-sister to the dam of La Collina (Strategic Prince), one of the best horses bred at the Barry’s Manister House Stud. She was trained by Frank’s great friend and ally Kevin Prendergast and she gained Group 1 successes in the Phoenix Stakes as a two-year-old and the Matron Stakes two years later, while also running third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.

La Collina is a daughter of the unraced Starfish (Galileo) who is the dam of another stakes winner in Entsar (Fastnet Rock). This is the immediate family of Fracas (In The Wings) who was runner-up in a Group 1 in Germany but whose five wins included the Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown.

Dragon Pulse is a great sire for breeders to use if they are looking for a runner with a better than average chance of winning a race. The Irish National Stud resident, who stood for €8,000 this season, has his third crop of juveniles racing in 2018. He was a smart two-year-old himself, beating the subsequent Group 1 winner Parish Hall to win the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh, and later running second to Power in the Group 1 National Stakes. He defeated champion two-year-old Dabirsim at three when he won the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau over a mile at Longchamp.
