THE death of Poet’s Voice this year robs commercial breeders of a great opportunity to use some of the world’s best bloodlines, at an affordable price.
The son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) was a Group 2 winning two-year-old, capturing the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, and the following year he added the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to his tally, defeating Rip Van Winkle and Red Jazz. He won four times in all, from seven furlongs to a mile, and his first three crops have already yielded 18 stakes winners, half of them group winners and five of them classic winners.
The latter group includes last weekend’s Group 2 Oaks d’Italia winner Sand Zabeel, racing in the colours of Jaber Abdullah. Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, Sand Zabeel is trained by Andreas Wohler in Germany and this victory was a major step up for the filly who was twice successful in Germany. The other classic winners by Poet’s Voice are Summer Festival (2018 Italian Derby), Poetic Dream (2017 German 2000 Guineas), Poeta Diletto (2016 Italian 2000 Guineas) and Mi Raccomando (2017 Italian 1000 Guineas).
Sand Zabeel’s weekend victory saw her leap to the head of affairs when it comes to performers produced by the Gold Away (Goldneyev) mare Samira Gold. Bought for €65,000 as a yearling by Gill Richardson, Samira Gold was put in training for Jaber Abdullah with Luca Cumani and she had a productive three-year-old career, winning twice at listed level.
At stud she has produced four winners from her six foals of racing age, the German three-time winner and listed-placed Paris Rose (Cape Cross) being the best of the rest. Following Sand Zabeel are a yearling filly by Kodiac (Danehill) and a colt foal by Golden Horn (Cape Cross). Samira Gold is one of three winners from the unraced Capework (El Gran Senor) and the other pair won a single race each in France.
Capework had six winning siblings, the only one of which earned any blacktype was her full-brother Plaza De Toros (El Gran Senor). He raced a handful of times for Aidan O’Brien, winning a maiden at two on his second start and running third to Lil’s Boy in the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial on his seasonal debut at three. He failed to build on that.
Wool Princess (Direct Flight), the dam of Plaza De Toros and Capework, had two notable half-sisters. Marie De Litz (Dictus) was the more talented racemare, winning the Group 2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville and being in the frame in the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano (third) and Group 1 Prix Vermeille (fourth).
Her year younger sibling Marie D’Argonne (Jefferson) was a minor stakes winner at Delaware and Hialeah but she is the dam of Polar Falcon (Nureyev), the champion European sprinter in 1991 and a very successful sire. His Group 1 winners include Pivotal (Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes and sire of more than 25 Group 1 winners), and Exclusive (Coronation Stakes and a Group 1 producer).
