FIERY Character will forever have a special place in the story of the Irish National Stud sire Dragon Pulse. Her maiden victory at Newmarket was the first win for a son or daughter of the sire and Tom Dascombe seems to be sweet on her prospects.

Bred by the brothers Dwan – Dermot and John – Fiery Character was sold at the Goffs Sportsman Sale last year to SackvilleDonald for just €18,000 and she is the fifth progeny and third winner for her dam Intricate Dance. The mare’s two previous winners did so in Poland and Sweden. Fiery Character’s year older half-sister Daydream, by Dream Ahead, is knocking on the door of success and has been placed this year for Jamie Osborne.

Intricate Dance, who raced twice, is an American-bred daughter of Aptitude. A son of A P Indy, Aptitude raced for Khalid Abdullah and was trained by Bobby Frankel to win the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Hollywood Gold Cup, getting the latter in the steward’s room. He was runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes and at stud got Grade 1 winners in North and South America.

Bred by Juddmonte, Intricate Dance is a half-sister to the dual stakes winner Short Dance and also to the dam of Lolly For Dolly.

The latter, now a broodmare in Japan, had her finest hour at Royal Ascot when she raced to victory in the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes, one of four group wins she had. She was sold out of the Tommy Stack yard at the December Sale for 500,000gns in 2011.

Dragon Pulse’s first crop number over 80 foals and so he will be well represented this year with his first runners. Trained by Jessica Harrington at two years, he beat the subsequent Group 1 winner Parish Hall when winning the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh, having landed his maiden at Leopardstown. He was runner-up to Power in the Group 1 National Stakes.

He was then sent to France to be trained and added the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau over a mile, beating the champion French juvenile Dabirsim. He comes from the family of last season’s dual Group 1 winning two-year-old Shalaa. Dragon Pulse stands for 2016 at a fee of €5,000.
