WALK In The Sun is unbeaten on both his starts to date in 2018, and this perfect beginning to his racing career must be a huge relief to connections of the three-year-old son of Street Sense (Street Cry). Trained by Jeremy Noseda for Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the colt made his racecourse debut at the end of January on the all-weather at Kempton, beating 13 opponents to land the spoils over seven furlongs in the hands of Ryan Moore.

He followed up this week, again on the all-weather but this time at Lingfield, but it has to be said that starting at 1/12 and facing just three others, he needed to win well. He obliged by seven lengths, though we did not really learn much more about his real ability. There is a long way to go between now and a possible classic engagement at the Curragh, but there is reason for his owners to hope that their major investment will pay off in time.

That investment was a record-setting €1.4 million at last year’s Arqana Breeze-Up Sale when Noseda’s wife Kerri Radcliffe made the winning bid. This was some distance ahead of the colt’s yearling purchase price as he was bought for just $15,000 the previous September at Keeneland when he was sold by his breeder, Godolphin.

Offered at Deauville by Willie Bowne’s Mocklershill and sold in partnership with Jim McCartan, the colt was Radcliffe’s only buy that week, and afterwards she commented: “I’ve been to every breeze up sale in the world this year and this is the nicest horse I’ve seen.”

Walk In The Sun is the sixth living produce of his stakes-winning dam Mystic Melody (Seattle Slew). She won the Listed Prix Coronation at Deauville and her placed efforts included being runner-up in the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux. Her previous winners are Abbey Singer (Dubawi) and High Pitch (Medaglia D’Oro).

Mystic Melody is one of 11 winners from her dam Munnaya (Nijinsky) and four others earned some blacktype during their racing careers. Head and shoulders ahead of them wall was the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and Grade 1 Woodward Stakes hero Alpha (Bernardini) and his six victories earned his owners almost $1.8 million.

Munnaya won the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial Stakes and her 11 winners were produced from 15 foals. She is also the dam of the multiple Grade 2-placed mare Lavender Sky (Mt Livermore). Munnaya is one of three stakes winners produced by the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes and Listed Wallis Stakes winner Hiaam (Alydar), the others being Group 2 Criterium d’Evry winner Sheer Reason (Danzig) and Listed Prix Yacowlef heroine Mall Queen (Sheikh Albadou).

Hiaam is a half-sister to the Grade 1 Queen’s Plate winner and successful sire Key to the Moon (Wajima), the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes and Hollywood Oaks winner Gorgeous (Slew O’ Gold) and the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks heroine Seaside Attraction (Seattle Slew). In addition to being a very successful racemare, Seaside Attraction bred the champion US juvenile filly Golden Attraction (Mr. Prospector), the Grade 1 Florida Derby winner and successful sire Cape Town (Seeking The Gold) and the Grade 3 winner and successful sire Cape Canaveral (Mr. Prospector).

This is also the family of the European Horse of the Year and another successful sire in Fantastic Light (Rahy).

Street Sense went to stud in 2008, is part of the Darley stallion team and this year commands a fee of $35,000. He was never out of the first four in 13 starts and won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before landing the Kentucky Derby and Travers Stakes at three. He was runner-up in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. He has nine Group or Grade 1 winners to date.
