SUCCESS for Under The Stars in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes was a breakthrough stakes success for first-season Darley stallion Night Of Thunder. This was the filly’s second win in as many starts.

Coincidentally, Night Of Thunder was unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old in 2013, including the Listed Doncaster Stakes, and the son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) put in a spectacular performance to win the Group 1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket the next spring and score by half a length from Kingman, the subsequent Epsom Derby hero Australia, Charm Spirit, Toormore, Kingston Hill, War Command and The Grey Gatsby. That was the only defeat ever sustained by Kingman.

Khalid Abdullah’s Kingman took his revenge in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, while Night of Thunder then ran second to Charm Spirit in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and third in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. During that winter Night Of Thunder was purchased by Godolphin and his first outing in 2015 was in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over a mile at Newbury where he held off Toormore to win by a neck.

On the same afternoon that Under The Stars won her Group 3, Night Of Thunder’s son Sun Power followed his early June victory and Listed Chesham Stakes fourth with a second place finish in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes, beaten just a neck.
