THIS week I paid a visit to Tom Meagher’s Kedrah House Stud, home to Well Chosen, newcomer Berkshire (Mount Nelson) and St Leger winner Rule Of Law (Kingmambo).

The Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) horse Well Chosen is on a roll and his growing list of winners was augmented at the weekend by the Leopardstown bumper scorer Sixshooter, trained by the equally in-form Noel Meade. Sixshooter’s value now bears no relation to the €3,500 he cost as a foal at Tattersalls Ireland when he was bought by Boyne Bloodstock. This a family with which Meade is well acquainted.

Sixshooter was bred by Christopher McKeever and his dam Lobinstown Girl (Luso) has been a loyal visitor to Well Chosen since she went to stud. Her first foal is She’s A Star and she won a bumper at Down Royal and two hurdle races for Noel Meade’s yard and connections, including owner Philip Meade. Unsold at just €1,000 as a yearling at the Tattersalls November Sale when she was Lot 3, she was not the biggest in size, but we now know that she possessed plenty of ability. She ran second to Death Duty in the Grade 3 Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan and third in the Grade A Bar One Racing New Stand Handicap Hurdle at Fairyhouse.

She’s A Star is followed by Iamastartoo ((Well Chosen) and she is also with Meade. In the first four on her first five starts in bumpers, she has shown a smidgen of form over hurdles and hopefully she can win a race.

Sixshooter is the third foal from Lobinstown Girl, while the fourth, a yearling filly by Well Chosen, was bought for €14,000 last November by Ballybrennan Stud.

Lobinstown Girl was also trained by Noel Meade and while the daughter of Luso (Salse) failed to win for the Meath handler, he did place her to finish third in a maiden hurdle at Thurles and runner-up in a handicap hurdle at Punchestown. It was a pity that she failed to win a race as she was one of only two foals produced by her dam Q Bar - and the other never ran.

Q Bar was a daughter of Phardante (Pharly) and she never managed to get her head in front on the racecourse proper, placing in a bumper, over hurdles and fences. She did however visit a winner’s enclosure in a point-to-point when she was handled by Dick Lalor. While a lack of opportunities may have hampered the family a little in recent times, it is a top-class pedigree after that.

Q Bar is a half-sister to Alexander Taipan (Taipan) and he won a Grade 1 novice chase at the Punchestown Festival in 2007. He was trained by Willie Mullins for the late Miriam O’Callaghan. Alexander Taipan was the best of 10 foals bred by the three-time winner Fayafi (Top Ville), three of whose siblings made an impact on the racecourse.

Anzum (Ardross) was the best of the trio and a top-notch staying hurdler. He won 10 times over timber and his Grade 1 successes were achieved in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot and the Tipperkevin Hurdle at Punchestown.

Jazilah (Persian Bold) won the Grade 2 Seagram Top Novices; Hurdle at Aintree and this was the outstanding success in a career that brought nine wins, five of them on the flat. He also placed in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. The other smart winner from Muznah (Royal And Regal) was Sh Boom (Alderbrook) and he landed the Grade 2 Stayers’ Hurdle at Haydock Park.
