THE day after going through the ring in the Sportsman’s sale, the yearling filly from the first crop of Elzaam out of the Oasis Dream mare Mandhooma could boast a significant pedigree update. Her two-year-old half-brother Artytype ran out an impressive winner of his maiden at Dundalk. Owned and trained by Johnny Murtagh, Artytype is obviously well regarded by connections and the post race comments were positive.

Artytype is the latest winner from the first crop of Roderic O’Connor who stands at Ballyhane Stud. The Irish 2000 Guineas winning son of Galileo is off to a great start at stud with the likes of Group 3 winner Great Page, the stakes-placed duo of Mangusto and Haalick, and the smart and improving pair of Mint Chai and Sharaakah among his many winners to date.

Bred by Shadwell, Mandhooma started her racing career in the colours of Hamdan Al Maktoum and with John Gosden, but five days after finishing last at Chelmsford as a two-year-old she was hastily sold at the Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale for just 1,000gns to Peter Hiatt who trained her to go on and win seven races and place a dozen times. Notably she won all her seven races at Brighton and did so from five and a half to seven furlongs.

As well as having racing ability, she also possessed a great pedigree. Her sire Oasis Dream stood this season for £75,000 – the best indicator of his position among the sire hierarchy. His sons Muhaarar and Goldream are his latest Group 1 winners, adding five triumphs at the highest level to their sire’s already mighty total. Previous winners at that level include Midday, Charming Thought, Power, Jwala, Prohibit, Aqlaam, Lady Jane Digby, Arcano, Naaqoos and Tuscan Evening.

Mandhooma is off to a great start at stud and she has a few half-sisters likely to add to the pedigree in the future too. She is one of four winners from the Gulch mare Shatarah who visited some of the best sires at stud, with winners also by the likes of King’s Best and Green Desert. Shatarah was the only one of the seven runners out of Arjuzah not to win, but she did place on four of her five starts.

The six winners out of Arjuzah were headed by the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Malhub, by Kingmambo, and the Grade 3 winner Dhaamer, a son of Dubai Destination.

A stakes-winning daughter of Ahonoora, Arjuzah also had two offspring that did not race, but both of them have been exemplary broodmares. They are Nebraas and Thawrah.

Nebraas is at the Irish National Stud and the daughter of Green Desert had bred six winners from six runners, the latest being Aimhirgin Lass in the colours of the President of Ireland. Her other winners include the dual Group 3 winner Yellow Rosebud (by Jeremy) and the stakes winner Seehern (by Pivotal).

Thawrah is a full-sister to Nebraas and she has made an excellent start at stud, her first four foals producing three winners, and like her own-sister they include two stakes winners.

The Dark Angel colt Heeraat won the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes, while the Camacho colt Ambiance is a listed winner.

This is a family that keeps producing early types and stakes winners, so hopes will be high that the progeny of Mandhooma will keep up the tradition.
