THERE was a poignancy about the victory of Last Goodbye in the bumper at Roscommon this week. The son of Millenary raced for the executors of the late Freddie Doyle and was trained by his daughter Liz. For sale, the trainer is not unsurprisingly hopeful he will stay in her yard. She also trained his half-sister Glen Beg, by Norwich, to win three times over hurdles.

Last Goodbye is the fourth winner for his dam Welsh Ana, an unraced daughter of Welsh Term. The others include six-time winner Freds Benefit by Beneficial, and the Beau Sher gelding Sher Beau. The latter won a point-to-point before graduating to the racecourse where his five victories included a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Fairyhouse and a Grade 3 chase at Navan. He was placed in the Grade 1 John Durkan Punchestown Chase.

The grandam of Last Goodbye is the unraced Paico Ana and she is a half-sister to four winners, the best of which was the David Elsworth-trained gelding Givus A Buck. He won at the Cheltenham Festival, finishing in front in the Ritz Club National Hunt Chase, and he was runner-up in the Whitbread Gold Cup. He was a son of the Henry Cecil trained stayer Buckskin.

Last Goodbye was sold as a foal for €8,000 by his breeder Ian Williams to Charlie Carter. He reoffered him at the Goffs Land Rover Sale in 2014 where he was unsold. His sire Millenary won the St Leger and has been at Knockhouse Stud for his stud career to date. This week it was announced that he had been sold and will stand in 2016 at Nunstainton Stud in County Durham.

Millenary was a very sound racehorse and his 35 starts included a dozen wins, seven of them in Group 2 races. The son of Dancing Brave will surely prove popular in his new home and Last Goodbye will hopefully go on to advertise him.
