MEHMAS set a new record number of winners for a European stallion with his first crop at the weekend, and by the time you read this the accompanying table could even be out of date. At close of business on Wednesday, his statistics show that 39 individual members of that first crop had won, and 10 of them are stakes horses.
He is the sire of a Group 1 winner, his sons Supremacy and Minzaal running first and third in the Middle Park Stakes, a race in which Mehmas himself finished third. Mehmas only raced at two, won half of his starts and his worst finishing position was in that Group 1. He beat Blue Point to win the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, was successful in the Group 2 July Stakes, and finished second to Churchill in the Group 1 National Stakes and behind Caravaggio in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.
Mehmas’ achievement this year is worthy of being labelled phenomenal and the numbers will surely grow before the end of the year. The Tally-Ho Stud-based stallion started out at a fee of €12,500 and this dropped to €10,000 for his second and third seasons.
Incredibly breeders got to use him for €7,500 this year. Now the only way is up for 2021.
Last year his yearlings averaged €35,673 and so far this year that average has risen to €57,383.
