FAME And Glory went to stud in 2013 but died just four years later. The son of Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) was a high-class runner who was successful in each of the five seasons he raced, winning 14 times and landing five Group 1 successes. He won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud at two, was a classic winner at three in the Group 1 Irish Derby, captured both the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Group 1 Coronation Cup at four, and the following year won the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup. He was also runner-up in the Derby at Epsom to Sea The Stars.

His first crop have just turned five and already it includes his first Grade 1 winner, the Lacy Solicitors Golden Cygnet Novice Hurdle victor Commander Of Fleet. Bred by Patricia Coghlan who was present to witness the victory at the weekend, the gelding was sold as a foal at Tattersalls Ireland for €35,000 to Mount Eaton Stud before being turned over for a modest profit when selling to Mags O’Toole for €47,000 at the Goffs Land Rover Sale in 2017.

He started his racing career between the flags at Moig South and won his only start, wasting no time before going on to land a Punchestown bumper on his first racecourse appearance last April.

Seven months later he was back at the Co Kildare venue to win his maiden hurdle, before finishing last of four behind Quick Grabim in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse. His Dublin Racing Festival win made quick amends for that blip on his record.

Commander Of Fleet is the first track winner for Coonagh Cross (Saddlers’ Hall), though she is also dam of a point-to-point winner in Boston Spray (Presenting). Coonagh Cross was also bred by Patricia Coghlan and raced for her, winning a bumper at Limerick when trained by Eoghan O’Grady. She is a half-sister to four winners, including the Grade 3 Ballybrit Novices’ Chase winner Sunset Lodge (Electric) and the dual Grade 2 runner-up Atum Re (Be My Native).

Commander Of Fleet is the latest star to emerge from a female line that has made it into these columns more often than most. The weekend’s Grade 1 winner has the unraced Midnight Oil (Menelek) as his third dam, a position he shares with Grade 1 winner Death Duty (Shantou), Grade 1 winner Foxrock (Flemensfirth), Grade 2 winner Beakstown (Stowaway) and Grade 3 winner Minutestomidnight (Vinnie Roe).
