IRISHMAN Sean Mulryan was a prominent owner in France some years ago and enjoyed plenty of success. He also raced some good horses in Ireland and his Grade 1 winners over jumps here included the Michael O’Brien trained duo Forget The Past and In Compliance, while in France he won at the top level with Cyrlight, Zaiyad, Mid Dancer, Bonbon Rose, Kiko, Polivolante and Or Noir De Samoza.
His first big flat race winner was Linda’s Lad (Sadler’s Well) who was trained by Andre Fabre to win the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud as a two-year-old. Mulryan also raced another Group 1 winning juvenile in Thewayyouare. Originally at stud in France, Linda’s Lad moved to stand in England in 2017 and is based at Vauterhill Stud in Devon where his fee is just £1,000.
Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) was the outstanding stallion of his era and his fame has since been eclipsed by his son Galileo. He has also become a huge influence in National Hunt breeding as his sons include King’s Theatre, Old Vic, Accordion, Court Cave, Kayf Tara, Milan, Oscar and Doyen.
On his dam side, Linda’s Lad is out of a mare by Alleged (Hoist The Flag) and that stallion’s sons include Flemensfirth and Shantou.
Linda’s Lad shares the same grandam as Rail Link (Dansili), winner of the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and a Group 1 sire on the flat
whose early runners over jumps are showing promise. While Linda’s Lad has not sired a runner on the flat approaching his own quality, he did, in 2018, sire his first Grade 1 winner over jumps when Draconien landed the Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown.
Now Linda’s Lad has another emerging star in the shape of Noel Meade’s Tout Est Permis (translates as everything is allowed). He won for the fifth time at the weekend when adding the Grade 2 Horse and Jockey Hotel Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles to an earlier victory in the Grade 2 Ladbrokes Troytown Chase at Navan.
Tout Est Permis is the best of three winners to date for the once-raced Kadalbleue (Kadalko), being joined on that list by the 2018 winners Au Pied Leve (Apsis) and Estrella Fugace (Agent Secret). Tout Est Permis is by some way the best runner in his family for four generations. You have to go back to his fifth dam Reverent (Riverman), a stakes-placed two-year-old winner, to find more blacktype.
Kadalko (Cadoudal), the maternal grandsire of Tout Est Permis, won a single race on the flat but between 1991 and 1993 he was an outstanding hurdler in France and his Grade 1 successes came in races such as the Prix Cambaceres Hurdle and the Prix Alain du Breil Hurdle, both at Auteuil. At stud his best runner was arguably Notre Pere, winner of the Grade 1 Fort Leney Chase at Leopardstown and the Punchestown Gold Cup.
