REDGRAVE may never rank among the list of top 10 horses to carry the colours of Highclere Thoroughbreds, but he will forever have a special place in the history of one of the most successful racing clubs ever as he recorded their 500th win.

Last weekend, on his fifth start, he won over a mile at Newmarket, and in the process boosted his sale prospects as he is due to go under the hammer at Tattersalls next Thursday morning.

Trained by Charlie Hills, the three-year-old son of Lope De Vega was bred by Tess Mahon and sold by her through the family’s Mountain View Stud for 100,000gns to John and Jake Warren in Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale.

Placed as a juvenile, Redgrave was gelded last year and was only having his second outing of 2017 when he won at the weekend. In so doing he also became the third winner of the year produced by his Nayef dam Olympic Medal, joining Wajeeh (by Raven’s Pass) and Olympic Duel, a son of Acclamation. The trio are the first foals of their dam and she also has a yearling filly by Charm Spirit.

The Mahons no longer own Olympic Medal, as she was sold covered by Bated Breath at Goffs in February for €30,000 to agent Jill Lamb. The mare was trained for her breeder, Queen Elizabeth, by Roger Charlton and she made a pair of starts, running well enough on both occasions without troubling the judge. She was acquired from the Queen at the December Sale for 55,000gns. This was a wise investment and her three sons sold to date aggregated 430,000gns as yearlings.

Olympic Medal is a half-sister to a couple of group winners by Machiavellian, Fictitious and Phantom Gold. The former won the Grade 3 De La Rose Handicap at Gulfstream Park and a listed race in England, while Phantom Gold went one better and scored in two Group 2 races, the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury.
