GODOLPHIN may have dominated the first two days of the Arqana August Yearling Sale but Monday's third and final session saw Coolmore and Peter Brant's White Birch Farm pay a sale record price of €4.6 on a Wootton Bassett colt who is closely related to Group 1 winners Above The Curve and Scandinavia.
Consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux, the colt is the first foal out of Deadly Nightshade, a Justify mare who was placed in three maidens for Coolmore in 2023 when trained by Joseph O'Brien before being sold for 900,000gns to Monceaux.
Godolphin, who were underbidders on the top lot, continued their Deauville spending spree on Monday when paying €2 million for a Night Of Thunder colt. Consigned by La Motteraye, the colt is the first foal out of Tagline (by Havana Grey), a Group 3-placed two-year-old for Rod Millman in 2022 before being sold for 110,000gns.
After buying another Wootton Bassett colt for €800,000 on Monday, this brought Godolphin's total spending at the sale to €13.3 million for just nine horses.
Last year Godolphin spent €8 million on eight horses at this sale and in 2024 they only spent €400,000 on one horse here.
