FOUR of the older (four and upwards) winners on Breeders’ Cup Saturday will be known to most, but one in particular had a profitable postscript to her win, selling for a large sum at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale for just a shade less than she had amassed during her racing career.
KATHYNMARISSA (USA), 5f by American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) out of La Dalila (Milt’s Overture). Bred by Don Alberto Corporation
Kathynmarissa won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, but her future lies in Japan after she sold to Northern Farm’s Katsumi Yoshida for $3.2 million on Monday at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Her sire American Pharoah has just completed his first season in the country where he is hugely liked. Shingo Hashimoto signed for her, and it was hinted that her first covering might be by the dual Japanese Horse of the Year Equinox.
Five-year-old Kathynmarissa won eight times in 16 starts, earning $3,255,745, having sold as a yearling for $200,000. At three she gained her first stakes win in the autumn, and was runner-up in the Grade 1 American Oaks. There followed a curtailed campaign at four. She blossomed this year, and her wins included the Grade 1 Diana Stakes, the Grade 2 Flower Bowl Stakes, and finally at Keeneland.
A Triple Crown winner and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero, American Pharoah now has 10 Group/Grade 1 winners, two of them in Europe. Kathynmarissa is out of the Group 1 Chilean Oaks winner La Dalila, whose four winners from five runners include the Chilean champion and Oaks winner La Poetisa (Empire Maker).

NITROGEN (USA), 4f by Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) out of Tiffany Case (Uncle Mo). Bred by D J Stable
Father and son, Len and Jonathan Green, operate as D J Stable. They had a remarkable 2026 Breeders’ Cup, breeding both Haffner and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Nitrogen. They still own and race the latter, and plan to race her again next year and try to repeat her Distaff success.
Nitrogen has two championships already to her name and was making a third appearance at the Breeders’ Cup. At two she was placed behind Lake Victoria in the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies Turf, and last year she was runner-up in the Distaff. Now that she has won that race, the Green team would like to do so again. They bought Nitrogen’s dam, the stakes-placed Tiffany Case, for $320,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale carrying Love to Shop (Violence), a Canadian stakes winner and Grade 2 runner-up.
Tiffany Case’s second foal, Nitrogen, has taken her record to a new level. She has amassed $4,108,354 in earnings and was crowned last year’s champion three-year-old filly after landing the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes. She tackled the Distaff last week having won the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Saratoga, and she was runner-up to Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes.
The Greens have a two-year-old half-sister to Nitrogen named Sniper (Gun Runner) who, like her sister, is in training with Mark Casse. She will be retained as this year, at the January Horses of All Ages Sale at Keeneland, the Greens parted with Tiffany Case, in foal to Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway), for $3.2 million. She was purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm.
DETERMINISTIC (USA), 5c by Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) out of Giulio’s Jewel (Speightstown). Bred by Hinkle Farms
What a way for Deterministic to end his racing career, recording win number 11 in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. He has retired to begin a stallion career at Bill Farish’s Lane’s End Farm where his covering fee is a modest $25,000. A son of the prominent sire Liam’s Map, who stands at Lane’s End too and will cost $80,000 in 2027, Deterministic is out of three-time winner Giulio’s Jewel.
A $625,000 Keeneland September Sale purchase, Deterministic was trained by Christophe Clement and won for him. Following Christophe’s death in 2025, his son Miguel took over training duties, quickly securing a first Grade 1 victory for the colt in the Manhattan Stakes. Deterministic would go on to record five Grade 1 wins on turf. He is the only horse to win the Grade 1 Manhattan and Fourstardave Stakes in the same season and for good measure in consecutive years.
Deterministic’s dominant win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile was at the expense of last year’s Eclipse champion turf horse Notable Speech. He goes to stud having set a course record at Saratoga in this year’s Manhattan, and with winnings of $4,231,439, the highest for any runner by Liam’s Map. The latter has three Grade 1 winners his year, the others being the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo, and Grade 1 Arlington Million hero Burnham Square.

T O ELVIS (USA), 4c by Volatile (Violence) out of Stopshoppingdebbie (Curlin). Bred by Jeff and Melissa Prunzik
What a tale behind the success of T O Elvis, who provided Japan with a success in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, his first run since taking the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes in stakes record time back in May. He is a son of Stopshoppingdebbie, a mare who was something of a legend at Emerald Downs in Washington. She made her first nine starts there, won them all, and eight were stakes races.
T O Elvis is the only Grade 1 winner to date for his sire Volatile, who has just completed his fifth season at Three Chimneys Farm at a $10,000 fee. The farm has yet to decide what he will stand for next spring. Volatile won five of his six lifetime starts, culminating with victory in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap. He was forced into retirement due to a fracture of his cannon bone.
The four-year-old T O Elvis was purchased privately at his breeder’s Stone Ridge Farm and taken to Japan. There he won five times, notably the Group 3 Capella Stakes. That was his first run in pattern company and came at the end of last year. The colt was invited to run in the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, but that plan was abandoned due to turmoil in the Middle East. Plan B, to race in Tokyo, was also shelved, and he was sent to the USA to run on Kentucky Derby day.
His target was the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes, more than four months after his last run and win. He stunned everyone with a victory by more than three lengths, extending his winning streak to five. Royal Ascot was mooted but again was eschewed, and he went to Japan to be prepared for the Breeders’ Cup, and another triumph.
T O Elvis is not the only stakes winner for Stopshoppingdebbie. Her son Generous Tipper (Street Sense) was placed in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at two and won at stakes level more than a year later.
There is no shortage of blacktype winners in the family, but most have gained their wins at Emerald Downs. Stopshoppingdebbie is a daughter of Taste The Passion (Wild Again), a dual stakes winner there, and the 16 stakes wins amassed by her three blacktype-winning daughters were all at Emerald Downs.
