MID afternoon on Friday the beautifully-bred daughter of Tamayuz and the dual Group 3 winner Ziria entered the ring at Tattersalls and within minutes had eclipsed all but one of the prices achieved at the sale 12 months earlier.
“She is a lovely filly, with a great attitude and she is a good mover - she really put her head down and galloped,” said Alastair Donald of the filly that he purchased for 200,000gns. Underbidders included BBA Ireland’s Eamonn Reilly and trainer David O’Meara.
Donald added: “She has a strong-enough pedigree - her full-sister Fadhayyil was decent [she won the Listed City of York Stakes and was second in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes] and she is a breeding prospect. She goes to Andrew Balding, who has had success with progeny by Tamayuz before.”
The filly was a vendor buy-back at €140,000 as a yearling and was consigned by Eddie and Wendy O’Leary’s Lynn Lodge Stud. They had purchased her for 58,000gns as a foal. In addition to being a full-sister to a stakes winner, three other siblings also won blacktype races.
The breeze-up section of the sale saw 143 lots sell for a total of 4,697,300 guineas whilst the horses in training saw 61 lots realise 543,700 guineas, taking the sale turnover to 5,241,000 guineas, the second best return in the sale’s history.
Earlier in the session Stephen Hillen paid 145,000 for a half-brother by Lope De Vega to the Group 3 winner Nargys. “I thought he was the best horse here,” said Hillen. “He did a stylish breeze, he is by a good stallion and has a pedigree.” Hillen was buying on behalf of trainer Kevin Ryan. The colt was sold by Brendan and Vanessa Holland’s Grove Stud and the price was a healthy reward for the €66,000 paid for the colt last year.
GOOD LUCK
Ryan and Hillen have had good luck with breeze up purchases previously, including Astaire and The Grey Gatsby. Royal Ascot will not be on the colt’s agenda. “He won’t be out soon,” said Hillen, “it will be two or three months.”
Norman and Janet Williamson had a nice touch with a well-related son of Havana Gold, bought as a yearling in the Tattersalls October Book 3 Sale by Mags O’Toole for 42,000gns. “He is a lovely physical,” said bloodstock agent Ross Doyle after purchasing the colt for 105,000gns from Oak Tree Farm. The colt was the first to make a six-figure sum.
“He has a good family on his dam’s side, is by a good stallion, did a good breeze and has come from a good producer. I have known the horse for a time as I help the breeder with his matings. He goes to Jim Boyle for a client,” Doyle added.
SLADE POWER
A member of the first crop of Slade Power sold for 100,000gns, bought by Anthony Stroud of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. “She is for Simon Crisford for his client Sheikh Duaji Al Khalifa who owns Alwasmiya, winner of last year’s Bosra Sham Fillies Stakes,” said Stroud. “She did a good breeze and seems to have a good temperament.”
Part-owner and consignor Amando Duarte said: “She was led out unsold as a yearling and I loved her, so I bought into her then with Charlie Oakshott who had pinhooked her as a foal. Since day one she has pleased us and I am delighted that she is going to such a good home. She has been at Johnny Butler’s Charnwood Stables throughout.”
Shortly afterwards another six-figure sale lot appeared. A Kyllachy colt, whose third dam bred Danehill, he fetched 100,000gns and was bought by trainer Simon Dow for owner Robert Moss.
“He is a fine imposing individual and did a very good breeze,” said Dow. “He has been bought for Royal Ascot and he looks a precocious and forward type.” The colt was sold by Willie Browne’s Mocklershill and was originally a 75,000gns foal buy who was retained as a yearling at 85,000gns.
BEST PINHOOK
The best pinhook of the sale must surely be that of the Ruler Of The World colt out of a half-sister to the St Leger winner Harbour Law. Sold by Ger and Yvonne Kennedy of Sherbourne Lodge Stud, he was bought at the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale for €7,000 and sold this time for 90,000gns to Federico Barberini on behalf of Appletree Stud.
“He is a real proper two-year-old type,” said Robert Thornton of Appletree. “We were looking for a ready-to-go juvenile and he did a great breeze - we loved him. He goes into training with Archie Watson - we have a filly with him already.”
“He has always shown as a lot of speed,” said Ger Kennedy, “and it was Yvonne who found him. He really is an unbelievable horse – he is by a very good horse, out of an Exceed And Excel mare and from a good family. He was to sell at the Ascot Breeze Up Sale but got cast and so could not travel.”
IMPRESSED
Beaten a short head for the title of pinhook of the sale was the Raven’s Pass colt out of the Invincible Spirit mare Tranquil Spirit. Middleham Park and Aidan ‘Mouse’ O’Ryan combined to buy the colt, sold by Knockanglass Stables, for 85,000gns, more than 10 times his yearling value.
“We watched his breeze on TV and were impressed - he got ticks from us and he did a good time,” said Tim Palin of Middleham Racing. “When we came here and pulled him out we loved him and were very impressed with him. He goes to Richard Fahey and we’ve had success sending fast breeze up horses to Richard before.”
It was a great result for Thomond O’Mara’s Knockanglass Stables - the colt having been bought for 8,000gns in the Tattersalls October Book 3 Sale by Howson and Houldsworth.
The previous lot in the ring was a son of Kitten’s Joy and he sold for 80,000gns. “He has been bought for E5 Thoroughbreds,” said Richard Fitzgerald of BBA Ireland. “They have Good Magic in the Kentucky Derby this weekend. This horse did a good breeze and is a nice sort - he will go to trainer Jessica Harrington. E5 already have Landshark with Jessie and are keen to expand its European interests.”
The colt is out of the four-time winning Harlan’s Holiday mare Tough Business and from the family of the Grade 1 Matron Stakes winner Meadow Breeze, and Overanalyse, winner of the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. He was sold by C.H. Thoroughbreds who bought him for $20,000.
Blandford Bloodstock paid 78,000gns for Knockgraffon Stables’ Morpheus half-sister to four winners, from the family of the Group 1 Oaks winner Talent. This was another hugely successful pinhook as Michael Byrne junior gave just €7,500 for her at Fairyhouse last September.
Alastair Donald of SackvilleDonald spent 75,000gns on one of the earlier lots in the sale, a Charm Spirit colt consigned by Morna McDowall who purchased him as a yearling for just 10,000gns. He goes to trainer Ed Walker for a new client.
The February-born colt is out of Pearlofthequarter, a half-sister to Madison’s Charm who won the Grade 3 Comely Stakes and was third in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes. It is also the family of Duke Of Marmalade and Ruler Of The World.
