IN the last 10 years, Tattersalls have divided the second week of their mammoth October yearling sales into two separate auctions, Books 2 and 3, sometimes also with Book 4, though not this year.
Book 2 this time lasts for three days, from Monday to Wednesday, October 9th to 11th, starting at 10am each morning. There are 804 yearlings catalogued, 30 more than last year.
Then, from Thursday to Saturday, October 12th to 14th, the other part of the October Yearling Sale is Book 3 containing another 662 candidates. The yearlings sold at the Book 3 Sale are eligible for the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.
Recent Group 1 winners bought at the Book 2 Sale include the Irish Derby star Jack Hobbs (60,000gns) and the dual Nunthorpe Stakes winner Mecca’s Angel (16,000gns), the St Leger hero Kingston Hill was bought for only 70,000gns and this year’s Deauville Group 1 star Brando cost 52,000gns.
Book 2 has yearlings by most of the top sires, including Sea The Stars, Cape Cross, Dark Angel, Invincible Spirit, Kodiac, Mastercraftsman, Nathaniel, New Approach, Oasis Dream, Pivotal, Shamardal, and Teofilo, as well as several leading American sires, such as Elusive Quality and Speightstown.
There are half-brothers and sisters to many Group 1 stars, including Fiorente, Erupt, Harbour Law, Shakeel, Al Wukair, Brando, Mount Nelson, Arctic Cosmos, and Gilt Edge Girl.
