THE year at Tattersalls Ireland drew to a low-key close last Saturday with the company’s one-day November Flat Foal & Breeding Stock Sale producing a top lot of €50,000 and set of results that were broadly similar to last year.

The sale produced an aggregate of just under €550,000 which was a near 8% drop on last year although this was in large part down to a catalogue that was smaller than the one from 2018. The median of €3,000 matched last year’s figure and the €6,442 average increased by 4%. The clearance rate improved slightly from 50 to 55%.

On the whole this was a relatively subdued day’s trade and most of the highlights came from the brief mares’ section that brought the day to a close. Most of the sale was given over to foals but trade in this sector was quiet and reflected the level of demand that exists in this section of the foal market.

Previously, this auction took place in advance of the November National Hunt Sale but this year it was staged after that sale and the Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell explained: “The rational for changing to the new date was to increase the footfall at the sale. We believe as indicated by the increase in the clearance rate that the change has been beneficial.”

Wahgah sells as top lot

Derrinstown Stud supplied a draft of popular mares and taking centre stage here was Wahgah, a listed-placed daughter of Distorted Humor who sold in foal to Mukhadram.

Already the dam of a two-year-old winner by Mukhadram, the eight-year-old Wahgah was knocked down to Gerry Aherne, acting through the BBA Ireland, for €50,000.

“She’s a lovely big mare and I’ve bought her for an Irish client, a friend of mine, and she will be staying in Ireland. She was a decent racemare and she’s well-bred mare off a good farm and her second runner is a winner so we’ll see what the spring brings,” said Aherne.

Derrinstown sells Invincible Spirit mare Buroog

DERRINSTOWN Stud also offered the unraced five-year-old Invincible Spirit mare Buroog who was offered with an attractive Iffraaj covering. The daughter of the Albany Stakes heroine Habaayib was snapped up by Maurice Burns for €30,000.

“I’ve bought her for a client who had a couple of good sales this year. She’s from a nice family and is in foal to a good stallion on an early cover so there was plenty to like about her. She will go back to my client’s farm from here and in the spring she will visit one of our stallions,” reported the Rathasker Stud man.

Derrinstown also offered the winning Clodovil mare Ejadah who was carrying to Dawn Approach. The eight-year-old half-sister to the Futurity Stakes winner First Cornerstone cost Tetromeen Ltd €25,000.

Cosmodrome in foal to Saxon Warrior

THE mares’ section also featured the €30,000 sale of the stakes winner Cosmodrome.

The daughter of Bahri is in-foal to Saxon Warrior and she was snapped up by Kill Bloodstock.

Ballywalter Farm, who offered Cosmodrome, also supplied El Issidro and she was bought by Alan Dunne for €20,000. This daughter of Beat Hollow is in-foal to Zoffany and she is an own-sister to the Del Mar Derby winner Vagabond Shoes.

Kodiac colt foal top lot

THE most expensive foal on offer was a son of Kodiac who was bought by Razza del Velino in a private sale. He was consigned by Kilmaglish House Stud and comes from the family of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) third Sapieha.

The Kodiac horse Adaay will be represented by his first runners next year and he supplied a €19,000 colt who was knocked down to Flash Bloodstock. This price was closely matched by Mount Eaton Stud when they gave €18,000 for a son of Champs Elysees who was purchased with a view to returning for the store sales in 2022.

Among those sires being represented by their first foals was the high-class Scat Daddy horse El Kabeir and the Group 1-class sprinter Cotai Glory. Both horses were responsible for €16,000 colts.
