Kingman reigns supreme

THE first of their draft and by some way the best. That was the son of Kingman whose sale for £440,000 was handled at Doncaster by Hillwood Stud’s Charlie Vigors. He was consigning on behalf of Bob and Pauline Scott who bred the colt from the listed winner Shamandar, a daughter of Exceed And Excel.

Shamandar’s record as a broodmare was beginning to look disappointing, her four previous foals all having run and just one being placed when the catalogue was sent to the printers.

Thankfully her three-year-old won since and her two-year-old was placed, and these updates will have helped to increase interest in her best-bred offspring. All the leading players were involved, but the gavel fell in favour of Coolmore’s Kevin Buckley and he signed in the name of MV Magnier.

The price was a record, eclipsing the £380,000 given last year for Gleneagles’ son Mahanakhon Power who is unraced to date.

Kingman had three yearlings in this year’s catalogue. MC Bloodstock gave £120,000 for Highclere Stud’s son of Asaawir and the colt is a half-brother to four winners. A filly by Kingman was sold by Ballyhimikin Stud to Longways Stables for £70,000.
