CANYON City commanded a price of £85,000 to lead the way easily as the final sale of the year at Tattersalls Ireland Ascot concluded on Monday. Accounting for more than a fifth of the day’s entire takings, the Godolphin-consigned three-year-old son of Authorized was placed on all his six starts in France, most recently in October at Deauville.

A 275,000gns yearling purchase and from the family of Kayf Tara and Opera House, the colt will now race from Neil King’s yard. The trainer purchased him on spec and is seeking a new owner.

As usual, the Godolphin draft created great interest and five of the nine lots that made a six-figure sum came from their offering. Next best was Cape Dignity and this three-year-old son of Teofilo was placed at Newcastle and Lingfield recently, both his starts to date. He leaves Hugo Palmer to join John O’Shea after selling for £20,000.

Just over a year ago the yearling colt by Invincible Spirit out of Dark Promise sold for 575,000gns. Now named Dark Magic and gelded, the two-year-old moves to Dean Ivory to be trained having sold for just £14,000. He is the first foal of a stakes-winning half-sister to the Oaks winner Love Divine, the dam of St Leger winner and sire Sixties Icon.

Another unraced two-year-old sold by Godolphin was Secret Sands, a daughter of Cacique and half-sister to the Group 2 winner Mister Impatience and the Grade 3 winner Tottie. She cost Tony Smith’s Ermyn Lodge Stud just £11,000, quite a discount from her 180,000gns yearling purchase price last year. Rosemay, a two-year-old daughter of Mayson, showed some ability in two starts this year at Chelmsford and sold for £10,500.

Cornish Warrior moves from Rebecca Curtis to Neil Mulholland after his sale for £26,000. The five-year-old son of Oscar is an own-brother to the Grade 2 winning chaser Oscar Looby and has been placed in bumpers and over hurdles. Another gelding moving yards is The Groove, a three-year-old son of Azamour who has run once. He transfers from David Loder to Fergal O’Brien. Two lots sold for £10,000 each. Mel Smith Bloodstock paid that sum for the three-year-old Sakhee’s Secret filly Kashtan, a winner this year and last for Harry Dunlop’s stable. The five-year-old Souriyan is a three-time winning son of Alhaarth and he leaves Jamie Snowden to join Peter Bowen.
