ONCE again the Newmarket July Sale will require three days, from July 8th to 10th, as the very substantial catalogue published by Tattersalls contains 803 lots, 46 more than last year. As usual the first day’s trade features breeding stock, before the emphasis switches to horses in training and untried lots later that day and at the other sessions.
Some very substantial drafts are those from Darley (115), Shadwell (36) and Juddmonte (54). There are also some group and listed winners and placed horses, including Brendan Brackan, Supplicant, Battalion and Paene Magnus, also two Brazilian Grade 1 winners. Broodmares bought at the July Sale in recent years include the dams of Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup stars St Nicholas Abbey (3,200gns) and Wrote (13,000gns), also of Group 1 winners Ectot, Prince Gibraltar, Most Improved, Wootton Bassett, Together and Jan Vermeer.
There are only six broodmares with foals at foot this year but the sires of those foals include Arcano, Kheleyf, Poet’s Voice and Society Rock. Altogether 139 broodmares are catalogued and among the covering sires are Canford Cliffs, Dark Angel, Exceed And Excel, Kodiac, Lope de Vega, Motivator, Nathaniel, Pivotal and Teofilo.
