In the last eight years Tattersalls have divided the second week of their mammoth October yearling sales into two separate auctions. Book 2 this time lasts for only three days from Monday to Wednesday, October 13th to 15th, starting at 10am each morning. There are 828 yearlings catalogued, 137 less than last year, and selling continues all day.
Then on Thursday and Friday, the other part of the October Yearling Sale is Book 3, with an entirely separate catalogue of its own, containing another 587 candidates. Most of the yearlings throughout the week are eligible for the Racing Post Yearling Bonus scheme, which pays substantial prizes to the winners of selected maiden races.
The recent Group 1 Doncaster St Leger hero Kingston Hill was bought at the Book 2 Sale for only 70,000 guineas. Book 2 is always slightly overshadowed by the exceptional quality of Book 1 in the previous week, but there is no shortage of talent, with yearlings by most of the top sires, including Sea The Stars, Montjeu, Cape Cross, Danehill Dancer, Invincible Spirit, Mastercraftsman, Shamardal, Teofilo, etc, as well as several leading American sires such as Elusive Quality and Street Cry. There are half-brothers and sisters to many Group 1 stars, including Wootton Bassett, Chinese White, Maarek, Vale Of York, Dic Whittington and Tiggy Wiggy.
