IT was a Horse Show Week of first-time success for several showring handlers, including Patrick McCarthy in the opening broodmare class on Saturday morning. Having led John Roche’s Assagart Mistress to win the broodmare championship at Clonakilty, McCarthy had the luck of the draw again when Assagart Saviour obliged giving the Bandon man a Dublin red rosette on his first outing. Patrick, who served his apprenticeship with Christy Roche, starts a new job in the Cotswolds as assistant trainer to Emma Jane Baker at the end of August. No doubt he’ll be in demand at shows before then and credits his parents, Meelin Stud owner and Irish Horse Board member Paddy and mother Susan, who once worked as a groom for Jack Doyle, for teaching him the showring basics.
