IS there anything quite as interesting as trying to suss out a National Hunt trainer? Most of the flat versions can be pretty boring in comparison.
Gosden is forever worth listening to, Aidan’s good away from the races but it’s the “unbelievable horse”, “great minds” think alike after a big win on track. Appleby’s pretty up front but just appreciative of the whole team.
Over jumps though, there’s Mullins, acting forgetful, did I enter him in that? We’ll enter and see...”
We might go here, might go there. The only plan is that the plan isn’t made until the last minute. But you know it’s a ruse and there’s rarely a wrong step taken.
There’s Tizzard, in a similar state though this time you are never 100% sure if he is sure of what he’s doing, “All these lovely ‘orses”, “We’ve been riding him wrong for four years!”
There’s Henderson, often looking like he doesn’t even want to run the horse. And the sense of relief when the race is over. We’re all living the agony with him.
There’s Nicholls, says what he means, means what he says. There’s Elliott, keeping a bit up his sleeve too – “got to talk to Eddie...”
And add in a host of the smaller operators and you’ve got plenty to digest before you add in any actual race. It is a shame the congestion on RacingTV means you miss so many after-race interviews recently because watching the trainer can be as fascinating as watching the horse.
