THE Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) came to the aid of this horse when the horsebox in which it was being towed was in a serious collision. The three-vehicle road traffic collision took place on Derrylinn Road, Kinawley and resulted in the horse becoming trapped in the overturned trailer.

A team from Enniskillen Fire Station and the NIFRS Large Animal Rescue Team from Omagh Fire Station were called to the scene by the PSNI to attend to the occupants of the car as well as the animal.

“We regularly attend road traffic collisions where people are trapped, and we use specialist extrication equipment to perform rescues,” explained the NIFRS spokesperson.

OVERTURNED HORSE BOX

“Today we had a road traffic collision with a difference, where, as well as freeing the driver of a crashed car, another trapped casualty was a horse, trapped in an overturned horse box on Derrylin Rd, Enniskillen.”

A veterinary surgeon sedated the horse before the NIFRS crews and the Omagh Specialist Large Animal Rescue Team carefully extricated the animal from the horsebox using slings and a teleporter.

The horse was then transported to a local farm, where it quickly recovered from its ordeal.
